The Cost of Advice...
Share |
Traditional advice is expensive. Advisors may charge:
  • A % of assets under management—often 1% but it could be more or less. In other words, for every $100,000 you have invested, the advisor earns $1000 per year for working with you.
  • Commission—for mutual funds these vary according to share class.  You typically pay an upfront fee of up to 5.75% on dollars invested (varies from fund company to fund company and by the amount invested) as well as an on-going annual fee ranging from .25% to 1.00%--these fees are not always transparent.
  • Hourly fees/Retainer—these vary, but $250 per hour is typical
  • 12b-1 fees
  • Soft Dollars

Under these compensation models, the cost of good advice is beyond the reach of most Americans.  Because the cost of providing comprehensive one-on-one advice is very expensive, few advisors are willing to accept clients with less than $100,000 to invest.

A new paradigm must emerge to provide Americans with sound and practical financial advice at a price that won’t break the bank.
